Counselling and psychotherapy sessions for individuals are 50 minutes in length while counselling sessions for couples and families are usually 1.5 hours. For counselling sessions, both you and your counsellor will determine the agenda after the initial assessment and will work closely to that agenda.
For psychotherapy the course of treatment is usually more intensive with continuity of sessions being integral to the therapeutic process. Psychotherapy sessions are less structured than for counselling and progress per session isn't necessarily quantifiable, rather it is "experienced" over time.
For coaching and executive mentoring a plan is usually agreed upon in the first few sessions. Time and frequency will be discussed at this time.
Sessions are usually held at the LifeConnect Practice however telephone sessions are available for clients located in remote places or when travelling.
Since many people are unsure of what approach they need, the initial half hour discussion at LifeConnect is the opportunity to address this question, and ascertain the best approach and practitioner to suit the individual needs and issues. There is no charge for this discussion.
Counsellors and psychotherapists differ from one another in terms of training and approach. In brief, counselling is a broad name for a wide variety of procedures to help people adjust to and manage difficult circumstances through therapeutic discussions, for say situations involving grief and loss, relationship difficulties, work related issues, there can also be the administration and interpretation of tests, and vocational assessments.
Psychotherapy on the other hand, tends to focus more on understanding the underlying issues which create anxiety and distress for the person when coping with the demands of everyday living. As with counselling, there are a number of psychotherapeutic approaches and the approach practised at LifeConnect is Self Psychology - The Conversational Model, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
Mentoring and coaching are forward looking and solution focused. This process often involves setting objectives and specific goals to work towards.
